Карлтонский университет расположен в столице Канады - городе Оттава. Получил свое название от территории округа Карлтон, который был объединен с Оттавой 1960 году. Основанный в 1942 году, как небольшой колледж для тех, кто бросил образование в годы «Великой депрессии», уже через 15 лет получил статус университета и стал первым широкопрофильным высшим учебным заведением провинции Онтарио.
